Thank you for joining us today. Please introduce yourself to our readers. They want to know you, some of the background story to bring some context to your interview.

Joseph Federico: My background is in publishing but since the 2008 market crash, I learned to pivot to survive and thrive. My niche currently is in digital and social media marketing and I’ve grown leaps and bounds during the pandemic.

You are a successful entrepreneur, so we’d like your view point, do you believe entrepreneurs are born or made? Explain.

Joseph Federico: I believe entrepreneurs are made, plain and simple. You have to be born with drive, but have the knowledge to want to become a self-made success.

If you were asked to describe yourself as an entrepreneur in a few words, what would you say?

Joseph Federico: I wasn’t always an entrepreneur. I loved book publishing and thought I’d make a career out of editorial work back in the day. Little did I know I had a long road ahead of me.

Tell us about what your company does and how did it change over the years?

Joseph Federico: Anchors To Dusk originally was a publishing company. As time went on, it evolved into a social media marketing agency.

Thank you for all that. Now for the main focus of this interview. With close to 11.000 new businesses registered daily in the US, what must an entrepreneur assume when starting a business?

Joseph Federico: That they need to dedicate most of their free time to start up and a majority of money into a website and social media efforts. You need a presence first and foremost.

Did you make any wrong assumptions before starting a business that you ended up paying dearly for?

Joseph Federico: Yes, that I’d get clients immediately. That’s not how this works.

If you could go back in time to when you first started your business, what advice would you give yourself and why? Explain.

Joseph Federico: I’d have several clients lined up first before launching then I’d also have a website set up. I was doing it all alone by word of mouth.

What is the worst advice you received regarding running a business and what lesson would you like others to learn from your experience?

Joseph Federico: The worst advice I received was to simply give up. That’s not me and how I work. I never gave up.

In your opinion, how has COVID-19 changed what entrepreneurs should assume before starting a business? What hasn’t changed?

Joseph Federico: Changed — That going alone is hard.

Hasn’t changed — You can do anything you set your mind to.

What is a common myth about entrepreneurship that aspiring entrepreneurs and would-be business owners believe in? What advice would you give them?

Joseph Federico: Don’t follow the crowd.

What traits, qualities, and assumptions do you believe are most important to have before starting a business?

Joseph Federico: Transparency. Drive. Dedication.

How can aspiring leaders prepare themselves for the future challenges of entrepreneurship? Are there any books, websites, or even movies to learn from?

Joseph Federico: Read ‘GET SCRAPPY’. It works. Then read it again. Take notes.

You have shared quite a bit of your wisdom and our readers thank you for your generosity but would also love to know: If you could choose any job other than being an entrepreneur, what would it be?

Joseph Federico: An antique furniture salesman.

Thank you so much for your time, I believe I speak for all of our readers when I say that this has been incredibly insightful. We do have one more question: If you could add anyone to Mount Rushmore, but not a politician, who would it be; why?

Joseph Federico: Harriet Tubman. We need more female leaders of the past to inspire female leaders of the future.

Jed Morley, VIP Contributor to ValiantCEO and the host of this interview would like to thank Joseph Federico for taking the time to do this interview and share his knowledge and experience with our readers.
